Dr. Herman B. Gray, MD, MBA, FAAP
Chair, Department of Pediatrics
Herman Gray, MD, MBA, FAAP, is the Chair of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. Prior to his appointment as Chair in early 2018, Dr. Gray was President and CEO of United Way for Southeastern Michigan, an organization dedicated to improving lives and communities, and addressing social determinants of health.
Dr. Gray is a recognized health care leader and child advocate, having served for eight years as the DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM) president and chief executive officer, as well as the CHM chief operating officer and chief of staff. Dr. Gray’s background also includes roles in academic medicine, managed care, and public health including Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Vice Chief for Education and Pediatric Residency Program Director at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Vice President and Medical Director of Clinical Affairs for Blue Care Network (a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan subsidiary) and Chief Medical Consultant for the Michigan Department of Public Health Division of Children’s Special Health Care Services. Prior to his formal administrative career, Gray was a private practice pediatrician in Detroit for ten years.
Dr. Gray has served on the boards of national, state and local professional and community organizations such as the U.S. Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC), the Children’s Hospital Association board of directors, the Children’s Hospital International Executives Forum, the Skillman Foundation Board, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Board, the City of Detroit Mayor’s Workforce Development Board, Co-chair of the Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren, the Detroit Maternal Child Health Forum Steering Committee, and the State of Michigan Maternal Infant Health Strategy Group.
Recognized for his community involvement, volunteerism, and passionate child advocacy, Dr. Gray has received numerous honors including being inducted into the Sparky Anderson’s Charity for Children: CATCH Hall of Fame. He was named a Top 25 Minority Executive in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare Magazine and Ambassador of the Year by Ambassador Magazine. He has been recognized by United Way of Southeast Michigan as a Billboard Community Leader, Humanitarian of the Year by the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, and Outstanding Physician Leader of the Year by the University of Tennessee College of Business Administration. He is also a recipient of the Health Care Leadership Award from the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.
Dr. Gray received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee. His undergraduate studies were at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
